Formats

Your files should not become different files because you opened them in Eiswe.

What Eiswe can edit, inspect, import and recognise — with the limitations named rather than buried.

Edit
A real working surface in Eiswe. Open, change and save the file.
Read
Open and inspect properly. Eiswe does not modify the original.
Import
Content comes into an Eiswe workflow, but may not stay editable as the original format.
Planned
A recognised direction, not current capability.

Support at a glance

Every row states its own limitation. Where a capability has not been confirmed against a shipped build, it says so rather than guessing.

Depth varies by platform — see below. Where a format is listed as editable, the original file is what is written back.

Format by format

DOCX
Text document

Eiswe works with the document format itself — open a .docx, edit it with styles, sections and comments, and save it back as the same file rather than a converted copy stored in a proprietary workspace.

Revisions and cross-device availability follow the same model as every other file. Very heavily formatted documents may not be reproduced in every detail.

XLSX
Spreadsheet workbook

Multi-sheet workbooks open with their structure, formulas and references, are edited as a workbook, and written back as .xlsx.

This is not a claim of complete Excel compatibility — some functions and very large workbooks behave differently.

PPTX
Presentation

Presentations open with their slides and layouts. Edit the content, reorder slides, then present, print or export as .pptx.

Advanced layout, transition and animation handling is not fully reproduced.

PDF
Fixed-layout document

Open a PDF directly: annotate, fill forms, reorder pages, print and export while the page structure stays intact.

No perfect round-trip is promised. Specialised PDF features — unusual form logic, embedded media, signature workflows — are not all supported.

TXT and MD
Plain text

Simple files stay simple. Text opens as text, with its encoding and line endings preserved on save.

Nothing is added to the file that another editor would not understand.

Notes
Native Eiswe content

Notes are the one thing that starts inside Eiswe rather than arriving as a standard file, so they are native Eiswe data — stored beside the work they describe, with attachments.

They still leave as ordinary text or Markdown, so a note is never trapped either.

CAD drawings

Inspection, not authoring.

Eiswe opens technical drawings so you can look at them properly — layers, geometry, properties, measurements. It does not edit them.

The source drawing is never modified or written back. If you need to change geometry, that still happens in your CAD application.

DXFReadOpened for inspection. Never written back.
DWGPlannedNative DWG reading is not available.
What inspection covers
Open drawingPan and zoomLayersSelectionPropertiesCoordinatesObject snappingDistanceCumulative distanceAngleArea and perimeterRadius and diameter
Eiswe does not edit CAD geometry, create entities or save drawings.

Opening a file is not the same as reproducing an application.

Support has depth. A file can open perfectly and still contain a feature from its original application that Eiswe does not reproduce — a rare spreadsheet function, an unusual slide layout, a specialised PDF behaviour.

When that happens the useful answer is to say so. When Eiswe cannot safely edit something, the safer answer is read-only.

Unsupported content
01Content Eiswe cannot interpret is preserved rather than dropped where that is possible.
02A file that cannot be edited safely opens read-only instead of half-editable.
03Partial support is stated in the product, at the moment it matters.
04Conversion that would silently discard content is not performed automatically.
These are design intentions for how Eiswe should behave, not a guarantee of byte-perfect round trips.

Format depth differs by platform

Desktop
Deepest support
The fullest format work: local files, offline editing, and the heaviest documents and workbooks.
Web
Real work, no install
A genuine workspace in the browser rather than a viewer — open, edit, share and export.
Android
Mobile-appropriate
Notes and files, viewing, capture and import, selected editing and sharing, shaped for the phone.

Beyond the first version

Grouped by what Eiswe does with them today. Direction is marked as direction — it is not a release commitment.

Documents
DOCXTXTMDODTRTF
DOCX is the first-class editable document format.
Spreadsheets
XLSXCSVODS
Workbook structure and formulas are the priority.
Presentations
PPTXODP
A first-class surface, not an afterthought.
Documents, fixed
PDF
PDF is a working surface, not a preview.
Images
PNGJPGSVGHEIC
Viewed and attached. Eiswe is not an image editor.
Technical
DXFDWG
Inspection territory, deliberately not authoring.

Need a format tested?

Eiswe is in active development, and real files are more useful to us than a list of extensions. Tell us the format and send a representative sample.

Only send files you are allowed to share. Nothing confidential, nothing under an agreement that forbids it.
